An event that adds itself

Title, start, end, place and a note in the standard iCalendar format. Scanning offers "add to calendar" — no ticket link, no sign-up page.

Rendered by the same engine as the generator. Point the WIA scanner at it — or a plain camera at the small booster QR in the middle.

What the code carries

A VEVENT block (RFC 5545) — the same text format calendar invitations use. The phone's calendar app understands it directly.

What happens when it is scanned

  1. The scanner reads the event out of the code.
  2. It shows the title, time and place on a card.
  3. One tap opens the calendar's "add event" screen with the fields filled in.

Why a WIA Code for this

An invitation that still works when the event page is gone — the details are in the dots.
Fits on a poster, a wedding card, a conference badge, in a shape that matches the occasion.
Room for a description and a location, not just a title.

How much fits

Measured on the live engine (bytes of content, after error correction). The QR column is a standard QR code of the same printed size, for comparison.

This page's example is 159 bytes. The booster QR is a small standard QR placed in the centre so phones without the WIA scanner still get somewhere useful — it leads to the web scanner, which then reads the full code.

Questions people ask

Does it need a calendar service?
No. The event is stored in the code; the phone's calendar app adds it locally.
What about time zones?
Times are written as entered. For a fixed-place event, the generator writes floating local time; state the time zone in the description if guests travel.
Can I include a link to tickets?
Yes, in the description field — it is shown as text in the calendar entry.
Will it update if I change the date?
No. A code is a snapshot; print a new one and tell people.
Does a plain camera work?
A plain camera reads the booster QR, which opens the WIA web scanner; the scanner then offers the calendar entry.

WIA Code is a radial-symmetry 2D code. The content lives in the code; there is no server in between when it is scanned. Generated with the WIA Code engine · scannable · no account needed
